Expressive Mixed Media

Colour, texture, and creative freedom for emotional expression

Expressive Mixed Media is a flexible, sensory‑rich artmaking program designed to support self‑expression, emotional release, and creative exploration. Using a combination of paint, collage, drawing materials, and layered textures, participants are invited to create freely in ways that feel meaningful, stimulating, or soothing — depending on their needs in the moment.

This program recognises that not all older adults want quiet, calm activities. Expressive Mixed Media offers a safe, supported space for residents to explore identity, memory, and feeling through vibrant, hands‑on creative processes.

Why This Program Works

  • Encourages emotional expression in ways that feel natural and non‑verbal

  • Supports autonomy, choice, and personal meaning

  • Offers both calming and invigorating sensory experiences

  • Builds confidence through experimentation and play

  • Accessible for all cognitive and physical abilities

  • collage with textured and patterned papers

Sessions are slow‑paced, supportive, and adaptable — allowing each person to work in their own way.

Collaborative Group Canvases

Optional addition — perfect for communal spaces

This program also offers the opportunity for residents to contribute to a large collaborative canvas. Each resident adds a small section — a wash of colour, a collage fragment, a mark, a texture — building a shared artwork that reflects the collective spirit of the community.

These group canvases are ideal for:

  • lounge rooms

  • dining areas

  • memory support units

  • reception or foyer spaces

They create:

  • a sense of pride and ownership

  • a visual reminder of community

  • a meaningful, lasting artwork made by residents together

This option is especially supportive for residents who may not complete individual artworks but still enjoy participating in a shared creative process.
