Place and Belonging - Mibanbah - Bundjalung Country

Artist Statement

My painting practice is rooted in a deep connection to landscape — both the physical environments I inhabit and the internal landscapes shaped by memory, emotion, and belonging. Born and raised in Aotearoa/New Zealand, I grew up surrounded by dramatic coastlines, shifting weather, and the cultural stories and legends woven through the land. These early influences continue to inform my work, not as literal depictions, but as atmospheric echoes and emotional undercurrents.

Working in mixed media, I build paintings through fluid, gestural mark‑making and layered colour. Each piece evolves intuitively, guided by rhythm, movement, and the sensory impressions of place. I’m drawn to the way landscapes hold history, mood, and identity — how they shape us, and how we carry them within us. My paintings explore this interplay between outer environment and inner terrain, tracing the subtle shifts of feeling, memory, and presence.

Now based in the Northern Rivers of NSW, my work continues this ongoing conversation with land and belonging. Through abstraction, I seek to create spaces that feel alive, atmospheric, and open — inviting viewers to connect with their own sense of place, story, and internal landscape.
